National Defence University to be established for Ghana Armed Forces- Education Minister

A bill to establish a National Defense University for the Ghana Armed Forces has been passed by Parliament and is awaiting presidential assent.

Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu made the statement during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday July, 20, 2026. He described it as a long-held aspiration of the Ghana Armed Forces.

“It was a desire of the Ghana Armed Forces to have a National Defense University and the bill has since been passed by Parliament and awaiting the President’s assent,” Haruna iddrisu said

The proposed National Defense University is expected to serve as a center of academic and professional military education, training, and research for the Ghana Armed Forces and allied institutions.

The university will offer degree and postgraduate programmed in defense studies, security, strategy, and leadership, and will position Ghana as a hub for military education in West Africa.

Once the President assents to the bill, the Ministry of Education will collaborate with the Ministry of Defense and the Ghana Armed Forces to operationalize the institution, including appointing a governing council and recruiting faculty officers to start operations
