The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has committed US$250,000 (about GH¢3 million) in emergency assistance to Ghana, offering financial support to victims of the country’s recent devastating floods and reinforcing regional cooperation in disaster response.
The grant, announced through Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be transferred in full to government accounts upon receipt before being channelled into relief and recovery efforts for affected communities.
While modest relative to the broader reconstruction costs expected after the floods, the contribution represents an early injection of humanitarian financing and highlights ECOWAS’ role in mobilising regional support for member states facing climate-related disasters.
The assistance comes as Ghana continues to assess the economic and social impact of the flooding, which damaged homes, public infrastructure and livelihoods across several communities, adding fresh pressure to public resources already stretched by reconstruction and social spending commitments.
In a statement, the Government of Ghana expressed its “deep and infinite gratitude” to ECOWAS, describing the donation as a demonstration of African solidarity and compassion during a period of national hardship.
The latest commitment underscores the growing importance of regional institutions in providing rapid emergency assistance as West African economies face increasingly frequent climate-related shocks.
