Corrections Policy
Last updated: 7/31/2026
1. Our Commitment to Accuracy
NewsOrigins is committed to publishing accurate, verified information. When we make a mistake, we take responsibility for it. We believe that transparency about errors is essential to maintaining the trust of our readers. This policy explains how we handle corrections, updates, and clarifications.
2. How to Report an Error
If you believe NewsOrigins has published inaccurate information, please let us know. You can report an error by:
- Emailing corrections@newsorigins.org
- Using the contact form on our About page
- Leaving a comment on the article in question
Please include the article title or URL, a description of the error, and any supporting evidence (such as a link to an official source or document). We acknowledge all correction requests within 48 hours.
3. Types of Corrections
We categorize corrections based on the nature and severity of the error:
- Correction: A factual error that misleads readers — such as a wrong name, date, statistic, or quote. Corrections are marked with a visible correction note at the top or bottom of the article, and the text is updated.
- Clarification: A statement that is technically accurate but could be misunderstood. Clarifications add context or precision without changing the original claim. A clarification note is appended to the article.
- Update: New information has become available since publication that adds to the story. Updates are labeled with the date and time they were added.
- Retraction: The article is fundamentally flawed or should not have been published. The original text is removed and replaced with a retraction notice explaining why the article was withdrawn.
4. Correction Process
When an error is confirmed, the following steps are taken:
- The editor who approved the article reviews the error and determines the appropriate correction type.
- The article is updated with the corrected information.
- A correction note is appended to the article, stating what was wrong, what was corrected, and the date of the correction.
- If the error was significant (e.g., a wrong verdict, a misattributed quote, a fabricated detail), a correction note is placed at the top of the article for at least 7 days.
- If the article was distributed via our RSS feed, newsletter, or social media, we publish a correction notice on those channels as well.
5. Transparency
We do not silently delete or alter published content to hide errors. Every correction is visible to readers. We keep an internal log of all corrections for editorial review and quality improvement. On request, we can provide a summary of corrections made to a specific article.
6. Timeline for Corrections
We aim to process correction requests as quickly as possible:
- Breaking news errors: Corrected within 1 hour of confirmation during business hours, or by 9:00 AM the next business day if reported after hours.
- Standard articles: Corrected within 24 hours of confirmation.
- Retractions: Processed within 48 hours and reviewed by the editor-in-chief.
7. Editorial Accountability
Repeated errors by a journalist or editor are tracked and reviewed by editorial leadership. We use corrections as a learning tool to improve our reporting standards, not as a punitive measure. However, a pattern of carelessness may result in additional training, closer editorial supervision, or other appropriate action.
