Etihad to Launch Direct Abu Dhabi–Accra Flights in 2027, Boosting Ghana’s Aviation Ambitions

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways plans to commence direct passenger services between Abu Dhabi and Accra in 2027, marking a significant expansion of air connectivity between Ghana and the United Arab Emirates and reinforcing Ghana’s position as a growing aviation hub in West Africa.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by an Etihad delegation, led by the airline’s Senior Vice President for Aeropolitical, International and Government Affairs, Captain Khalid Humaid Al Ali, to Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe.

The proposed route is expected to enhance trade, tourism and investment flows between the two countries while providing travellers with improved access to Etihad’s extensive global network through its Abu Dhabi hub. The move also strengthens the long-standing economic and diplomatic relationship between Ghana and the UAE.

Welcoming the delegation, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the airline’s entry into the Ghanaian market. He said both the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) are prepared to provide the regulatory and operational support necessary for a successful launch.

The minister also encouraged Etihad Airways to explore opportunities for collaboration with the government as Ghana continues efforts to re-establish a national carrier, a strategic objective aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation ecosystem and improving international connectivity.

The meeting was attended by the Director-General of the GCAA, the Managing Director of GACL, the Ministry’s Director of Administration and other senior government officials.

The planned launch reflects increasing international airline interest in Ghana’s aviation market, supported by rising passenger demand, expanding trade links and the country’s strategic location as a gateway to West Africa. If completed as scheduled, the new route will add another major global carrier serving Accra, further enhancing competition and connectivity in Ghana’s international aviation sector.
