GCB Bank Unveils Tier 3 Pension-Backed Loan to Unlock Retirement Savings Without Cashing Out

GCB Bank has launched a Tier 3 Pension-Backed Loan, introducing what it describes as Ghana’s first financing solution that enables contributors to use their Tier 3 pension savings as collateral while keeping those retirement funds fully invested.

The product, launched on Wednesday in Accra in partnership with five pension trustees—Petra Trust, Pensions Alliance Trust, Axis Pension Trust, Negotiated Benefits Company (NBC) and Standard Pensions Trust aims to broaden access to credit by allowing individuals to leverage accumulated pension balances without withdrawing or liquidating their retirement investments.

The initiative represents a significant innovation in Ghana’s financial sector, bringing together the banking and pensions industries to address one of the country’s longstanding challenges: improving access to affordable credit while safeguarding long-term retirement security.

Speaking at the launch, Executive Head of Retail Banking at GCB Bank, Sina Kamagate, said the facility reflects the Bank’s strategy of designing customer-centred financial solutions that meet immediate financing needs without compromising future financial wellbeing.

“At GCB Bank, innovation is driven by our customers’ needs. The Tier 3 Pension-Backed Loan provides individuals with a smart and responsible way to access financing while preserving the retirement savings they have worked hard to build. It is another example of our commitment to making banking more relevant, accessible and responsive to the changing needs of Ghanaians,” he said.

Unlike conventional lending products that often require borrowers to pledge physical assets or liquidate investments to secure financing, the new facility allows contributors’ Tier 3 pension assets to remain invested and continue earning returns throughout the loan period.

The Bank said the product is available to both existing GCB customers and non-customers who contribute to registered Tier 3 pension schemes, including Master Trust and Employer-Sponsored Schemes. Eligible applicants include salaried workers with stable income as well as self-employed individuals with vested Tier 3 balances.

Customers can access fixed-rate loans with repayment periods of up to seven years, while repayment can be made through salary deductions, employer payroll systems, G-Money or standing instructions, depending on individual arrangements.

Representatives of the participating pension trustees described the partnership as an important step toward deepening financial inclusion and strengthening collaboration between Ghana’s banking and pension industries. They noted that using pension assets as loan security could widen access to responsible credit while preserving retirement wealth for contributors.

Additional pension trustees are expected to join the programme in the coming months, broadening the product’s reach across Ghana’s growing pensions industry.

The launch underscores GCB Bank’s broader strategy of leveraging partnerships across the financial services ecosystem to develop innovative financing solutions that promote financial resilience, improve inclusion and support sustainable economic growth.

With more than 183 branches and over 340 ATMs nationwide, GCB Bank continues to expand its retail banking offerings as competition intensifies among financial institutions seeking to deliver specialised lending products to underserved market segments.
