Oil Slips as Shipping Resilience Eases Supply Fears Despite US-Iran Conflict

Oil prices eased on Friday as evidence of continued crude exports through the Middle East’s key maritime chokepoints reduced immediate fears of a supply disruption, even as the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran continued to cast a long shadow over global energy markets.

Brent crude futures fell US$1.03, or 1.2%, to US$88.00 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declined US$1.50, or 1.8%, to US$82.09. The retreat followed weeks of sharp gains that have seen both international benchmarks advance by approximately 20% in July, putting oil on course for one of its strongest monthly performances in recent years.

The decline reflects a reassessment by traders that, despite heightened military tensions, the physical flow of crude oil from the Gulf has remained more resilient than initially feared. Markets have been closely monitoring the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly 20% of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass each day. The waterway has remained at the centre of investor attention since the outbreak of hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with fears that any prolonged disruption could trigger a severe global supply shock.

While geopolitical risks remain elevated, continued tanker movements through the Strait of Hormuz and other strategic shipping lanes have eased concerns over an immediate interruption to global oil exports. Analysts note that the ability of producers and shipping operators to sustain exports despite escalating security threats has prompted some investors to unwind part of the conflict-driven rally that pushed prices sharply higher over recent weeks.

The market has also been encouraged by efforts to strengthen regional maritime security. Saudi Arabia announced plans to lead a multinational maritime defence coalition aimed at protecting commercial shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden—three critical corridors linking Gulf oil producers to international markets. According to the Saudi Defence Ministry, 14 countries, including Egypt, Pakistan, Djibouti, Sudan and Turkey, have expressed support for the initiative, signalling broader regional efforts to safeguard global energy supply chains.

Those efforts come as Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement intensified pressure on regional shipping by declaring a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, threatening an alternative export route that has become increasingly important as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have escalated.

Although crude exports have continued to flow, the conflict has significantly increased the cost of transporting oil. Shipping companies are facing sharply higher insurance premiums, freight charges and security costs as vessels transit through the region, adding a substantial geopolitical risk premium to global crude prices. These additional costs continue to underpin oil markets even as immediate supply fears have moderated.

For investors, the latest price movement highlights the increasingly complex balance between geopolitical risk and physical market fundamentals. While uninterrupted exports have prevented a more severe supply crisis, traders remain acutely sensitive to developments in the Middle East, where any escalation capable of disrupting shipping through Hormuz or the Red Sea could rapidly tighten global supply and reignite the rally in oil prices.

With geopolitical tensions showing little sign of easing, analysts expect crude markets to remain highly volatile in the coming weeks, as investors weigh resilient supply flows against the growing risk of broader regional instability affecting one of the world’s most strategically important energy-producing regions.
