Trump Holds Separate White House Talks with Zelensky and Netanyahu as Ukraine, Iran Crises Intensify

US President Donald Trump has held separate high-level meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the wars in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran continue to dominate global security concerns.

The White House described both engagements as “positive and productive.” The leaders were in Washington to attend the funeral of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime supporter of US military assistance to Ukraine and a strong ally of Israel.

Zelensky Pushes for Patriot Missile Production

During his meeting with Trump, President Zelensky focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defence capabilities amid escalating Russian drone and ballistic missile attacks.

According to Zelensky, Trump agreed to grant Ukraine licences to domestically produce Patriot interceptor missiles, a move Kyiv has sought for years to reduce dependence on foreign military supplies.

“He accepted that he will give us licences,” Zelensky told Fox News after the meeting.

The White House has not officially confirmed the reported agreement.

The Ukrainian leader also met executives of US defence giant Lockheed Martin to discuss accelerating joint production of Patriot systems and other advanced air defence technologies.

In a statement posted on X, Zelensky said their teams were already working on practical steps toward launching joint production.

Senate Advances Russia Sanctions

Zelensky later visited the US Capitol, where he met senators ahead of a key vote on a new sanctions package targeting Russia.

He described the legislation as an important show of solidarity.

“It will send a big signal to Europe, a big signal to Ukraine, and big support for our people,” he said.

The Senate voted overwhelmingly to advance the bill. If passed, it will move to the House of Representatives once lawmakers return from recess in September.

Patriot Systems Remain Critical

Ukraine has repeatedly requested Patriot missile systems, which are among the few air defence platforms capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

Each Patriot interceptor reportedly costs between US$3 million and US$5 million, while a single battery can simultaneously engage multiple threats and detect more than 100 incoming targets.

President Zelensky has previously said Ukraine requires about 25 Patriot systems to adequately protect its territory.

Analysts say local production would not only strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities but could also boost domestic confidence in Zelensky’s leadership following recent political challenges.

Netanyahu Focuses on Iran

Shortly after Zelensky’s departure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met President Trump at the White House.

The talks centred largely on Iran and regional security, against the backdrop of growing differences between Washington and Jerusalem over Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon and the broader Middle East.

Following the meeting, Trump described the discussions as “a very good meeting.”

Netanyahu said the two leaders shared a common objective.

“We have an understanding of a shared goal, to ensure that Iran does not have nuclear weapons, and other goals as well,” he told Israeli media, calling it “one of the best conversations” he has had with a US president.

Fresh Regional Escalation

The diplomatic meetings coincided with renewed military tensions in the Middle East.

According to the US military, Iranian forces attempted a surprise missile attack against American forces in the region, but all incoming missiles were intercepted.

The US also announced that American and Saudi forces carried out strikes against Iranian-backed proxy groups in eastern Iraq after they allegedly launched drone attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure.

Iran had not publicly commented on the reported incidents at the time of publication.

The back-to-back meetings underscore the Trump administration’s efforts to manage two major international security crises simultaneously, with Ukraine seeking expanded military support against Russia while the United States and Israel continue to coordinate their strategy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
