GRIDCo Races to Restore Power After Nationwide Grid Disturbance Trips Generating Plants

Ghana’s electricity transmission operator, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), has launched emergency restoration operations after a major disturbance on the national power transmission system triggered the simultaneous shutdown of several electricity generating plants, disrupting power supply across parts of the country.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, when the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced what GRIDCo described as a “power system disturbance,” causing multiple generating units to trip offline almost simultaneously and interrupting electricity supply to customers nationwide.

The event prompted GRIDCo to activate its established system restoration protocols, with engineers and system operators working alongside power sector institutions to stabilise the grid and restore electricity in the shortest possible time without compromising operational safety.

The transmission company said a comprehensive technical investigation is underway to determine the precise cause of the disturbance, adding that the findings will guide any corrective measures required to strengthen the resilience of the national grid.

While the company did not indicate the number of generating plants affected or the extent of the outage, the incident underscores the vulnerability of interconnected electricity networks, where disturbances at key points can rapidly cascade across generation and transmission infrastructure.

For businesses and industries, prolonged disruptions could affect productivity, while households face interruptions to essential services, reinforcing the importance of maintaining grid stability as electricity demand continues to grow.
