Gunmen Turn Agona Mankron into a War Zone as MoMo Vendor Shot in Multi-Location Robbery Spree

A quiet morning in Agona Mankron descended into chaos after a heavily armed gang launched a coordinated robbery operation that left a mobile money operator fighting for her life and sent terrified residents fleeing for cover as gunfire echoed through the community.

The six-member gang first struck at Agona Mankron Junction in the Agona East District of the Central Region, where they systematically targeted mobile money businesses. Three MoMo vendors were robbed of undisclosed sums, while one operator was shot during the attack and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The criminals then widened their operation, attempting to raid a nearby filling station. Their plan was thwarted after workers abandoned the premises before the armed men could carry out another robbery.

Rather than retreat, the gunmen moved onto the busy Bawjiase–Swedru highway near Kwanyarko, where they reportedly erected an illegal roadblock and held motorists at gunpoint, extending their reign of terror beyond the town and disrupting traffic along the major route.

Residents described the attack as one of the most frightening incidents to hit the area in recent times. Continuous gunfire forced people to run for their lives, with many hiding in bushes, homes and even a nearby cemetery in desperate attempts to escape the violence.

The brazen operation has reignited concerns over the growing wave of armed attacks targeting mobile money operators, whose businesses have increasingly become magnets for criminal gangs seeking quick cash. The incident also raises fresh questions about security along key transport corridors, where highway robberies continue to threaten travellers.

Community leaders and residents are demanding an immediate security crackdown, urging the Ghana Police Service to deploy additional personnel, intensify patrols and launch a swift manhunt to arrest those responsible before they strike again.

As investigators begin piecing together the events surrounding the coordinated attacks, the injured mobile money vendor remains under medical care, while a shaken community waits for assurances that normalcy—and public confidence—can be restored.
