NHIA injects GH¢219.8m into health sector as claims payouts approach GH¢1.2bn

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has injected GH¢219.84 million into Ghana’s healthcare system, extending a broader effort to improve the financial stability of hospitals and clinics as the government seeks to strengthen confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The latest disbursement, announced by the Authority, settles a combination of outstanding claims from previous years alongside vetted claims for services delivered up to May 2026, bringing total NHIA claims payments this year to nearly GH¢1.2 billion.

The payment comes at a time when healthcare providers have consistently called for faster reimbursements to ease cash flow constraints, maintain medicine supplies and sustain essential medical services. By reducing payment delays, the NHIA hopes to strengthen the financial resilience of facilities participating in the national insurance programme.

Private healthcare providers received the largest share of the latest allocation, collecting GH¢98.24 million, equivalent to 44.69% of the total payment. Public health facilities were allocated GH¢80.86 million (36.78%), while mission and faith-based facilities received GH¢40.70 million, representing 18.53%.

The distribution reflects the increasingly important role played by private providers within Ghana’s healthcare ecosystem, while maintaining support for public hospitals and mission facilities that continue to deliver a significant share of healthcare services nationwide.

NHIA Chief Executive Dr Victor Asare Bampoe said the Authority remains committed to ensuring providers receive reimbursements on time, describing financial sustainability as essential to uninterrupted healthcare delivery.

He noted that prompt payments help facilities—from major referral hospitals to Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds—maintain operations, procure medicines, retain staff and continue delivering quality care to NHIS members.

Beyond the latest disbursement, the Authority is implementing reforms aimed at improving claims administration, shortening payment turnaround times and enhancing the accuracy of submitted claims. The NHIA is also encouraging healthcare providers to submit claims promptly and in line with established guidelines to reduce administrative bottlenecks and speed up future reimbursement cycles.

The Authority said timely claims payments remain central to sustaining provider confidence in the NHIS and advancing Ghana’s ambition of achieving Universal Health Coverage, where citizens can access quality healthcare without experiencing financial hardship.

With claims payments nearing GH¢1.2 billion this year, the NHIA’s latest intervention underscores the growing importance of predictable healthcare financing in supporting both the operational sustainability of health facilities and the long-term credibility of Ghana’s national health insurance system.
