Ghana Premier League Champions Since 2000: A Look at the Clubs That Have Ruled Ghanaian Football

The Ghana Premier League has produced some of the most memorable champions in the history of Ghanaian football, with several clubs leaving their mark on the competition since the turn of the millennium.

From the dominance of Accra Hearts of Oak in the early 2000s to the rise of Medeama SC and FC Samartex in recent seasons, the league has witnessed a changing balance of power.

Accra Hearts of Oak started the new millennium in spectacular fashion, winning the league in 2000, 2001 and 2002. The Phobians returned to the top in 2004, before adding another title in 2006/07 and 2008/09. Their most recent league triumph came in the 2020/21 season, taking their total number of titles listed in the graphic to seven since 2000.

The Porcupine Warriors won the league in 2003 and 2005, before beginning another successful period between 2011/12 and 2013/14, when they won three consecutive league titles.

Kotoko added another championship in 2021/22, further cementing their status as one of Ghana's most decorated clubs.

The period after 2015 saw more clubs breaking into the championship race. Ashanti Gold won the league in 2015, followed by Legon Cities in 2016 and Aduana FC in 2017. Aduana FC had already established themselves as a major force by winning the league in 2009/10, making them one of the few clubs outside the traditional giants to claim multiple Premier League titles.

Berekum Chelsea also made history by winning the 2010/11 season. Medeama SC have emerged as one of the notable clubs of the recent era. The Tarkwa-based side won their first league title in the 2022/23 season, adding their name to the growing list of Ghana Premier League champions. They returned to the spotlight in the 2025/26 season, when Medeama once again captured the league title, according to the championship graphic.

The 2023/24 season produced another new champion when FC Samartex won the Ghana Premier League.
