Rally Pauses as Investors Turn Selective; MTN Ghana Accounts for Over Half of Market Turnover

The remarkable rally on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) showed fresh signs of cooling on Tuesday as investors adopted a more cautious stance, leaving the market marginally lower despite sustained trading activity.

The GSE Composite Index slipped 0.05% to 15,381.62 points, trimming its year-to-date return to an impressive 75.38%, while the Financial Stocks Index eased 0.04% to 8,267.79 points, maintaining a stronger annual gain of 77.91%.

Although trading volumes expanded significantly, the value of transactions declined, suggesting investors shifted toward lower-priced equities and became increasingly selective after months of extraordinary market gains.

Market capitalisation edged slightly higher to GH¢292.70 billion, highlighting the resilience of Ghana’s equity market even as benchmark indices retreated.

A total of 2.27 million shares changed hands during the session, representing a 26.64% increase in trading volume. However, the total value traded fell 2.84% to GH¢7.48 million, reflecting reduced participation in high-value transactions.

MTN Ghana Remains the Market’s Liquidity Engine

Once again, MTN Ghana dominated activity on the exchange, accounting for approximately 55.8% of the day’s total market turnover.

The telecom giant traded 590,619 shares worth GH¢4.18 million, reinforcing its position as Ghana’s most liquid listed stock and the primary driver of daily market activity.

Other actively traded equities included:

  • SIC Insurance – GH¢809,337
  • Kasapreko – GH¢508,042
  • Intravenous Infusions Ltd – GH¢445,511
  • GCB Bank – GH¢362,448

The trading pattern also underscored the structural nature of Ghana’s stock market, where a handful of highly liquid counters continue to dominate turnover while many listed companies record minimal daily activity.

Enterprise Group Leads Gainers

Among advancing stocks, Enterprise Group emerged as the strongest performer in absolute terms, climbing GH¢0.51 to close at GH¢39.00.

Other notable gainers included:

  • Intravenous Infusions Ltd (+9.9%)
  • Hords Limited
  • Cocoa Processing Company

However, these gains were outweighed by losses in major financial and consumer stocks.

SIC Insurance led the decliners, shedding GH¢0.18, followed by Republic Bank Ghana, Kasapreko, and CalBank.

Dividend Season Could Support Market

Analysts believe the market’s recent moderation reflects profit-taking following one of the strongest equity rallies in the exchange’s history.

Investor attention is now shifting toward upcoming corporate earnings and dividend payments, with several listed firms scheduled to reward shareholders in the coming weeks.

Expected dividend payouts include:

  • Enterprise Group – GH¢0.16 (August 14)
  • GOIL PLC – GH¢0.06 (August 10)
  • Societe Generale Ghana – GH¢0.24 (September 7)
  • TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana – GH¢2.34 (August 24)

These distributions are expected to provide fresh support for selected counters as investors increasingly prioritise income-generating stocks.

NewsOrigins Insight

Tuesday’s trading signals a shift from broad-based buying to a more selective investment environment. While Ghana’s equity market continues to deliver exceptional returns in 2026, investors are becoming more valuation-conscious after a rally exceeding 75% this year.

The next phase of the market is likely to be driven less by momentum and more by company fundamentals—including earnings growth, dividend strength and corporate performance. Until then, MTN Ghana remains the exchange’s dominant liquidity anchor, while stock-specific opportunities continue to define trading across the broader market.
