President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to honour the enduring legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills by embracing the principles that defined his public life, arguing that the nation’s greatest tribute lies not in annual commemorations but in faithful adherence to his ideals.
Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to mark the 14th anniversary of Professor Mills’ passing, President Mahama said integrity, democratic governance, tolerance, compassion and inclusive national development formed the foundation of the late leader’s statesmanship.
“The greatest tribute we can pay to Professor John Evans Atta Mills is not found in speeches, ceremonies or anniversaries,” Mahama said. “It lies in our commitment to the principles that he cherished and lived for.”
The President described Professor Mills’ vision of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana as an unfinished national project, pledging to continue advancing the values that shaped his administration.
He said the responsibility for safeguarding that vision now rests with all Ghanaians, urging citizens to uphold ethical leadership and strengthen democratic institutions in pursuit of national development.
Mahama also paid tribute to the Mills family, thanking them for sharing a leader whose life, he said, continues to inspire the country.
Looking to the future, the President encouraged younger generations to draw lessons from Professor Mills’ example, stressing that lasting leadership is defined not by public acclaim but by humility, service and commitment to the common good.
The annual memorial ceremony brought together government officials, political leaders, members of the Mills family and other dignitaries to honour the former President, whose leadership continues to be remembered for its emphasis on peace, accountability and constitutional governance.
