James Agalga takes over as Majority Leader as Mahama Ayariga heads to Chieftaincy Ministry

Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga has been named the new Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament following President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of incumbent Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The change in the Majority leadership comes as part of a broader reshuffle by President Mahama, which has triggered adjustments both within government and the governing National Democratic Congress’ leadership in Parliament.

Mr Ayariga’s nomination to the Cabinet effectively creates a vacancy at the head of the Majority caucus, paving the way for Mr Agalga to assume responsibility for leading government business in the legislature.

The appointment places Mr Agalga, an experienced legislator and former Deputy Minister for the Interior, in one of Parliament’s most influential positions.

As Majority Leader, he will be responsible for coordinating the government’s legislative programme, managing the NDC caucus in Parliament and working with the Minority leadership on the scheduling and passage of government business.

The transition comes at an important stage of President Mahama’s administration, with Parliament expected to play a central role in implementing the government’s economic and social policy agenda.

Mr Ayariga, meanwhile, will take responsibility for the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, subject to the parliamentary processes required for his ministerial nomination.

His movement from parliamentary leadership into the executive represents another significant adjustment to the Mahama administration as the President reorganises his team.

Mr Agalga represents Builsa North in the Upper East Region and has accumulated considerable parliamentary experience, particularly in national security, defence and interior affairs.

The reshuffle is expected to result in further changes to the composition of the NDC’s parliamentary leadership as the Majority reorganises following Mr Ayariga’s move to the executive.
